Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi, which occupies over 86 per cent of the country’s total landmass, is the largest of the seven emirates comprising the UAE. Abu Dhabi City, political capital of the emirate and of the UAE, is situated on an island about five miles wide and nine miles long. This is connected to the mainland by two bridges, Al Maqta and Mussafah. Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE, has his home in Abu Dhabi. Federal government offices, parliament building and foreign embassies are also located in this vibrant modern city. Since Abu Dhabi emirate possesses more than 90 per cent of the UAE's oil reserves and produces over 85 per cent of its oil, the main oil companies are located here, contributing to its status as a major business, manufacturing and trading centre. But, despite its national and regional importance, Abu Dhabi City manages to retain an air of ease and tranquility, with very few traffic problems architecturally; Abu Dhabi is a fascinating place where the domes and minarets of traditional mosques sit comfortably in the shade of gleaming futuristic skyscrapers. Tree-lined boulevards, manicured roundabouts and extensive parks soften the modern cityscape. All the major shopping malls and souqs are within easy reach and yet a short distance from the city centre the recently revamped Abu Dhabi Corniche stretches along the island’s mangrove-fringed and white sandy shores. Many of the city’s top-class hotels and restaurants, including the prestigious Emirates Palace Hotel, are located along the downtown section of this scenic stretch, overlooking an array of sandy islets that are rapidly undergoing development. One of these, Saadiyat Island, is spearheading the transformation of Abu Dhabi into a world-class tourism destination with a cultural emphasis. Here, along with high quality hotels, residential buildings and other facilities will be located a Cultural District containing museums, art galleries and performing arts centres, including the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Abu Dhabi contemporary art museum and the Louvre Abu Dhabi designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. This is but one of the massive new developments that are destined to revolutionise the tourist industry in the emirate. Ajman Ajman, located a short distance north-east of Sharjah’s capital city is the smallest of the seven emirates in terms of its physical size, occupying only about 0.3 per cent of the country’s total landmass. Ajman city is blessed with a natural harbour. Fishing, both traditional and modern, and dhow building are still important industries. This was once a quiet town with a beautiful 16km stretch of white sand beach but, like the rest of the Emirates, it is undergoing significant development. Ajman’s central square where the old fort, now a museum, is located, is within walking distance of hotels, restaurants and coast. Al Ain Al Ain, the capital of Abu Dhabi’s mainland Eastern Region, is a green, low-rise city nestling in the shade of Jebel Hafit (also spelled Hafeet). The surrounding district, blessed with substantial groundwater resources, is a rich agricultural area with many forts and archaeological sites and is also home to the UAE’s main university. Al Ain and Buraimi town are both situated in Buraimi oasis, but Buraimi town belongs to Oman, however you do not need a visa to visit. Dubai THE HEART OF THE EMIRATES Cosmopolitan Dubai is unquestionably the entertainment, shopping, sports and culinary capital of the Middle East. Hotels here rank amongst the worlds finest. and sporting facilities, from golf to game fishing, sand-skiing to scuba diving, are available in abundance. Entertainment ranges from traditional celebrations to trendy discotheques and the shopping features the best of the world's goods at low duty free prices. Food is excellent-both the intriguing local dishes and the dozens of other national cuisine. Street crime is unknown, and the climate is close to perfect. Add to this the clean uncrowned beaches, the spectacular mountain scenery and the timeless landscapes of the desert, and it is easy to see why Dubai is an increasingly popular destination amongst discerning travelers from around the globe. Having established an international reputation as a great place to Combine both business and pleasure, Dubai, with its extensive modern conference facilities, also hosts an extensive calendar of international trade fairs. Places of interest: visit the magnificent Jumeira mosque; modern beach-side palaces; the 150-year-old al Fahidi fort housing Dubai's museum; explore the rugged hajar mountains and the vast emptiness of the Arabian desert by four-wheel drive vehicles; relax on a moonlight cruise, a panorama of traditional and modern Dubai. For the family: Dubai is a great destination for everyone, and there is plenty to do for all the family. Fantastic theme and water parks such as wonderland and will wadi offer great entertainment for children and adults alike. Dubals splendid malls offer entertainment facilities to keep the youngsters happy whilst you indulge in some of the worlds finest shopping. Despite its small size (5 per cent of the UAE’s total landmass) and relative paucity of hydrocarbon resources, the Emirate of Dubai has made a significant impact on the world stage in terms of high-level investment at home and abroad and sport sponsorship, both nationally and internationally. Its success as a major tourist destination has also helped to familiarize the world with all that Dubai has to offer. Dubai City is built along the edge of a narrow winding creek that divides the southern section of Bur Dubai, the city’s traditional heart, from the northern area, Deira, a bustling commercial centre containing a range of retail outlets, souqs, hotels and golf courses, as well as the emirate’s international airport. The southern (towards Jumeirah, ‘New Dubai’ and Abu Dhabi) and northern sections of the city (towards Sharjah, Ra’s al-Khaimah etc) are linked by Al Shindagha tunnel, which passes under Dubai Creek at its entrance to the north, and an ever-increasing series of bridges. Major developments, such as Dubai Festival City and the Business Bay project are taking place along the extended Creek. Lined by distinctive skyscrapers, Sheikh Zayed Road leads south from the city centre, past the Dubai International Financial Centre and ‘Downtown Dubai’ towards Jumeirah about 30 minutes from Dubai City (depending on traffic conditions), This is a major tourism district with a number of award winning hotels, including the iconic Bur al-Arab, and a delightful sandy beach. Jumeirah and adjoining areas have witnessed extensive development in recent years. Offshore, The Palm Jumeirah has added hugely to the coastline. So too have the reclaimed group of islands known as The World. Further south Jebel Ali, home of a huge man-made port and the largest free-trade zone in Arabia, is the location of another Palm project, whilst nearby Dubai World Central airport is taking shape. BEST BUYS Shoppers will soon see why Dubai has such a well-deserved international reputation for variety and value. Weather you choose to shop in one of the many elegant,air-conditioned malls(deira city centre, mercato, waif city, burjuman and alghurair city are amongst the best known),or in the traditional atmosphere of the souks, you'll find bargains everywhere at some of the lowest prices in the word. Dubai is a vast emporium where electronic goods, watches, cameras, computers, and domestic equipment are amazingly inexpensive. The gold souk is renowned for its exquisite workmanship and range of style, whilst in other souks you can buy just about anything from silks and spices to perfumes and pearls. During the annul month-long Dubai shopping festival there are even more amazing discounts, raffles and bonus vouchers, as well as a comprehensive programme of cultural activities, street entertainment, art and musical extravaganzas. Dubai summer surprises, which runs from June to September, features activities for children as well as imaginative weekly themes, competition, displays, entertainment and activities. Out and about: when the sun goes down the lights come up in the city's restaurants, nightclubs, bars and discotheques. Dubai's nightlife is legendary, ranging from elegant Dining in chic hotels to casual snacks at busy street stalls. Lively pubs to cozy cocktail lounges. modern discotheques to traditional entertainment featuring Arab singers, dancers and musicians, open-air dancing by the desert. Sporting attraction: for lovers of sport there is enormous variety. Dubai is the venue of succession of world-class events including the Dubai desert classic golf tournament, international power boat races, Dubai Museum (04 3531862) The Al Fahidi fort located in Bur Dubai behind Al Fahidi St, houses Dubai Museum. The old fort building contains regular exhibits of weapons, traditional costumes and musical instruments and the courtyard has good examples of ‘arish huts and wooden boats. The new underground section of the museum houses wonderfully lifelike exhibits of an ancient souq, a Quran school, typical Arabic households and an oasis. There is also a display on the desert by night with interesting local wildlife. A separate room is dedicated to lively modern exhibits of pearl diving and fishing. Archaeological finds are displayed near the shop. Bastakiya District This was one of the original trading districts in old Dubai. Now famous for its delightful old houses with windtowers – rectangular structures that catch the wind and circulate it around the houses. The area is full of atmospheric narrow alleyways and many of the houses have been converted into art galleries. Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House (04 3937139). On the southern bank at the entrance to the Creek, this house was built in 1896 as a residence for the ruling family. The traditional coral-block structure has four elegant windtowers and a large central courtyard. Carved teak wood doors, wooden lattice screens and balustrades have all been restored to former glory. Delightful photographs of old Dubai. Heritage and Diving Village (04 3937151) Located next to Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoums’s House in Al Shindagha, the village features reconstructions of Dubai’s maritime past. Displays include a tented bedouin village with traditional weapons, chests and household utensils. Shops sell handicrafts and camel and donkey rides are sometimes available. Folk dance and music performances are staged from time to time. The village boasts a number of cafeterias and a seafood restaurant. Dubai Creek Waterfront A walk along the waterfront on the Deira side of Creek is a must if you want to experience Dubai’s traditional maritime roots. Here large motorized wooden dhows offload their cargos in the heart of the city. Abra Trips Take an abra trip across the Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira. Steps along the waterfront lead down to abras, small wooden motorized craft that are used to cross from one side of the creek to the other. Take a seat on the nearest boat. The fare will be collected by the skipper before the boat docks at similar steps on the far side. Majlis Umm Al Sheif (Al Ghoreifa) (04 3946343) Situated in Umm Suqeim, this house was originally constructed around 1955. The majlis (meeting room) was a summer retreat for Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum the late Ruler of Dubai. The simple two-storey stone building is constructed with traditional materials. The ground floor comprises an open liwan (terrace) and also a small storeroom, while on the second floor the majlis itself is decorated in traditional style with carpets, cushions and Arabic coffee pots. Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (04 3447755) The Centre endeavours to introduce visitors to life in the UAE and will organize visits to mosques, usually the impressive Jumeirah Mosque and to local homes. Booking is essential. Jumeirah Archaeological Site This affluent suburb to the south of Dubai city is the location of an important archaeological site dating to the early Islamic period. Large houses built of beach rock (farush) covered with lime plaster have been excavated at Jumeirah by a team from the Dubai Museum. Based on a study of the pottery found at the site, Jumeirah seems to date to the first two or three centuries of the Islamic era. Thus, it is in part contemporary with the sequence at Kush in northern Ra’s al-Khaimah, and with Jazirat al-Hulaylah. Jumeirah is, however, the only complete settlement with well-preserved architecture yet excavated from this important period. A selection of the finds from Jumeirah can be seen in Dubai Museum. Al Qusais Al Qusais is today a suburb of Dubai but in antiquity it was the site of an important settlement and associated cemetery. Excavations there in the early 1970s and 1980s revealed the existence of a settlement dating to the second and first millennium BC. Shaft graves dug straight into the sabkha, of similar date, yielded large numbers of copper or bronze vessels and weaponry, as well as many soft-stone vessels. Much of the material from Al Qusais is on display in Dubai Museum. Al Sufouh This name has recently been given to a suburb south of Dubai. In the early 1990s a tomb of typical Umm al-Nar-type was found here and subsequently excavated, along with parts of an adjacent settlement, by an Australian team in conjunction with Dubai Municiaplity. The most striking feature of the tomb at Al Sufouh was the fact that, just outside of it, were four pits containing human bone, most of it burnt. It is possible that this bone, which may or may not have come from the main tomb itself (i.e. been re-buried), represents the remains of extensive cremation episodes. Some pits held the remains of c. 50 individuals, all seemingly cremated at the same time. Fujairah Fujairah, occupying an area equal to 1.5 per cent of the country's total landmass, and with a breathtaking coastline of more than 90km, is the only emirate situated entirely along the Gulf of Oman. This emirate is a place of considerable natural beauty where jagged mountains and valleys sweep down to the settled palm-fringed coastal plain. There are some stunning beaches and good diving locations along the coast, whilst the hinterland features many cultural and historic sites. Agriculture and fishing, two traditional mainstays of the economy, still feature prominently. Fujairah City, the capital, is not just an attractive town in a stunning setting it is also is a rapidly developing commercial and tourist centre. Its strategic location, which provides easy access to international shipping routes, has played a key role in its development as one of the world’s top oil-bunkering ports. The main business area is along Hamad bin Abdullah Rd, between the Fujairah Trade Centre and the coast. Ra’s al-Khaimah Ra’s al-Khaimah, the most northerly emirate on the UAE’s west coast, has an impressive 64km shoreline. This is backed by a fertile palm-filled plain which is overshadowed by the precipitous Hajar Mountains to the east. In the north, close to the emirate’s border with the Sultanate of Oman, the sheer rocky mountain slopes seem to rise straight out of the sea. The area of the emirate is equivalent to 2.2 per cent of the UAE’s total landmass. Ra’s al-Khaimah also possesses a number of islands including those of Greater and Lesser Tunb, occupied by Iran since 1971. A winding creek, Khor Ra’s al-Khaimah, divides the city of Ra’s al-Khaimah into two distinct areas connected by a large modern bridge. A road to the south also joins the two parts of the town along the water’s edge. The old fort housing Ra’s al-Khaimah National Museum and the old souq are located in the western section, Old Ras al-Khaimah whilst the eastern area, Al Nakheel, is where hotels, offices and modern shops are to be found, mostly on Oman St, between the Hospital and Cinema roundabouts. Sharjah The Emirate of Sharjah, just north of Dubai, occupies an area equivalent to 3.3 per cent of the country’s total landmass. Sharjah has the distinction of being the only emirate to have land on both coasts since, although the main city is situated on the Arabian Gulf coast between, enclaves belonging to Sharjah (Kalba, Khor Fakkan and Dibba al-Husn) are located across the Hajar Mountains on the Batinah (East Coast), bordering the Gulf of Oman. Sharjah City, a bustling administrative and commercial centre with its own distinctive ambience, has some fine restored traditional buildings, together with a wide range of impressive museums. In 1998 the city was designated by UNESCO as the cultural capital of the Arab world for its commitment to art, culture and preserving its heritage.
United Arab Emirates The Crucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Dhabi, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Sharjah, Dubai, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah. Its generosity with oil revenues and its moderate foreign policy stance have allowed the UAE to play a vital role in the affairs of the region.
